Travel Guides

Spontaneity is essential for a great trip, but you need a general plan to provide a framework. Here’s tips on where to go and how to get there at these top destinations.

DeSoto Falls reflects sun rays as it roars into the gorge at DeSoto State Park in Northeast Alabama. Located near Mentone, the waterfall is 104 feet high.

Mexico City, Mexico

Centro Histórico and nearby Teotihuacán are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. These guides show you how to reach and tour both.

Mexico City’s urban zone of Centro Histórico is perhaps the most important cultural destination in Latin America. Aztec ruins, colonial Spanish structures, and modern federal buildings stand adjacent to one another at the central square of El Zócalo, providing a sweeping visual of the succession of power in central Mexico over the last five centuries.

Just outside the metropolis are the mysterious ruins of Teotihuacán, which helped inspired the rise of the Aztec Triple Alliance. These guides cover both locations and help you get around cheaply, safely, and efficiently.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is the most hallowed desert hiking ground on the planet. These guides take you off the rims and into its depths.

Named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon is Mother Earth’s most stunning desert environment. The vast majority of visitors stick to the rim overlooks, but you have to venture below to fully appreciate the canyon’s breadth and beauty.

My hiking guides take you across, around, and (in the case of the trail tunnels) through the iconic national park, traveling along famous routes like Bright Angel and lesser-known trails such as Grandview.

The morning light illuminates the richly colorful desert landscape of Arizona's Grand Canyon as hikers make their way along the South Kaibab Trail.

Crowley Lake Columns, California

The ancient columns at remote Crowley Lake are a geological phenomenon like no other on Earth. This is how I got there.

Created around 760,000 years ago by a catastrophic volcanic explosion, the columns at Crowley Lake are one of California’s best-kept secrets. They are hidden away on an unmarked beach in lonely Mono County, and there’s no signage to help you along the way.

Including videos and my custom map, my guides show you how to drive to the trailhead and then find the alien-looking columns. They also provide tips on how to make it in and out safely, particularly during colder months and following inclement weather.

Ancient columns rise on the bank of Crowley Lake in California as the sun sinks behind the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A cataclysmic geological event created them.
The stone ruins of Choquequirao Archaeological Park's main plaza spread out behind me in the remote Peruvian Andes. The site was a former Inca city.

Choquequirao Trek and Ruins

The Inca ruins of Choquequirao are among Earth's greatest adventure destinations. This is how I soloed the trail and toured the mysterious site by myself.

The trek to the Inca ruins of Choquequirao is no easy task; the former mountain stronghold is only accessible by a daunting out-and-back trail that totals around 40 kms and 19,700 ft (6,000 m) of elevation gain/loss. These guides show you how I soloed the hike and explored the site, which was named one of the world’s best adventure destinations by travel authorities National Geographic (2023) and Lonely Planet (2017).

Tikal National Park, Guatemala

The massive Maya ruins of Tikal are deep in the Central American jungle. These guides show you how I reached and toured the famous site.

Although the Maya civilization didn’t officially have a capital, Tikal certainly fit the bill. The ancient metropolis thrived in the rainforest lowlands of present-day Guatemala until the culture’s mysterious collapse near the turn of the 10th century. The ruins of the sprawling city are now one of Central America’s most compelling destinations.

My guides show you how to get to Tikal from Belize, take a comprehensive tour of the site, and make it back to the international border.

Temple I, also called the Temple of the Great Jaguar, stands at the eastern end of the Great Plaza in Tikal National Park, Guatemala.
I am shown standing atop Caana at the Maya ruins of Caracol. Rising over 140 feet above the jungle floor, the temple is the tallest manmade structure in Belize.

San Ignacio, Belize

The jungle town of San Ignacio is a congregation point for explorers in the Maya Forest. These guides show you where to go, eat, and stay along with how to get around.

Located a short distance away from the Guatemalan border, San Ignacio is surrounded by ancient Maya ruins and an extraordinary amount of biodiversity. Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave), Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Preserve, Xunantunich, and Caracol are just a few of the many attractions near the city.

My videos, photos, and custom maps help to show you how to get to San Ignacio from both the Belize City airport and the international border, and my backpacking guide for the jungle hideaway tells you where to tour, eat, and stay.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

OBX have been a place of mystery and adventure for centuries. My guides show you what to do, where to go, and how to use the ferries.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks have had no shortage of intriguing events and intrepid characters. The rich history of the barrier islands includes the disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, the last hideout of the notorious buccaneer Blackbeard, and the world’s first powered airplane flight. Throw in the over 5,000 shipwrecks that line the waters around the nicknamed “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” and it’s easy to see why there’s nowhere else in America quite like the modern-day waterman’s paradise that is OBX.

The sunrise casts orange hues over the Atlantic before a surf session in the Outer Banks. The islands in North Carolina are renowned for their wave quality.

Cusco, Peru

The former Inca capital is best known for nearby Machu Picchu, but there's much more to see and do in this high-altitude Andean city.

Situated in South America’s Andes Mountains, Cusco is a top destination for culture, food, and elite trekking. Some of the world’s top trail systems are within easy access of the city. Otherworldly alpine vistas like multicolored Rainbow Mountain and pristine Humantay Lake are also popular destinations for a day trip.

My Cusco guides, complete with videos and photos, are all about what to do in the area outside of world-famous Machu Picchu, which has unfortunately become a tourist trap in recent years. From the bustling Plaza de Armas to the quiet artisan district of San Blas, you could spend an entire trip in the city simply eating world-class cuisine and soaking in a cultural melting pot unlike any other.

A stone wall meanders into the distance at the massive Sacsayhuamán ruins in Cusco, Peru. The former Inca fortress offers spectacular views of the Andean city.
The Gingerbread House in Savannah's Victorian District is one of the most photographed properties in the city. The home is a popular venue for weddings.

Savannah, Georgia

Founded in the 18th century as an English colony, Savannah is now one of America's top travel destinations. These guides show you how I toured the historic city.

Overshadowed by Florida to the south and Charleston, SC, to the north, Savannah is every bit worth its own trip. The coastal city boasts beautiful buildings constructed in Victorian and Georgian architecture styles and public squares canopied under live oaks draped with Spanish moss. It’s also loaded with history that dates back to the colonial days of America.

My guides show you the top things to do and best places to eat while also taking you on a ghost tour of the historic district, which is widely considered the most haunted place in the U.S.
