I am seated on a rock in the mysterious Welsh Caves of Northeast Alabama. The caves were built in a cliffside by Native Americans centuries ago. Little else is known of their construction, and few even know they exist. Graffiti on the column in the background is a disappointing reminder of the damage and neglect that many Indigenous archaeological sites have endured since the arrival of European settlers.
