Barrels holding rare Carcavelos wine are lined neatly in a row at Villa Oeiras‘ cellar near Lisbon, Portugal. The facility was a former 18th-century palace of the Marquis de Pombal, a renowned nobleman who helped shepherd the country through crisis following the cataclysmic 1755 earthquake that demolished most of Lisbon.
