Granny Dollar was a Native American woman who lived a colorful life in Northeast Alabama during the 19th and 20th century. As a child, her family escaped the Trail of Tears by hiding in a cave. She wed a few decades later, but her husband died not long afterward during the Civil War. She didn’t marry again for 40 years. Granny Dollar lived until she was over 100, and legend says her spirit haunted the Mentone area for years following her death.
