A wild filly peers above the grass at North Carolina’s Shackleford Banks, a barrier island that is part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. The herd of Banker horses, which presently numbers over 100, is at least four centuries old. Their origin is a mystery; a popular theory is they were stranded by a Spanish shipwreck during the colonial era.
