A desert bighorn sheep trots slowly down the opening section of the Bright Angel Trail at Grand Canyon National Park, AZ. The animal, which is common in the park, has longer legs and a smaller body than its close relative, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. The desert bighorn sheep can survive without water for extended periods; it has evolved hooves that provide traction in the rocky, uneven terrain. Rams like the one in my video battle fiercely for mates during the rut, slamming their thick horns together in a struggle of attrition.
