I am shown with my tent and gear during a primitive beach camp at North Carolina’s Shackleford Banks. The uninhabited barrier island, which is just offshore from the town of Beaufort, is only reachable via watercraft. To get to and from Shackleford Banks, I used Island Express Ferry. The cost for a roundtrip ticket was $26 USD, and the trip took around 15 minutes.
You can camp anywhere on island. Services are very limited, but there are composting toilets on the west end near the dock. Click the above image to enlarge, click to view my high-resolution photo gallery, or click to browse my travel guides for the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
