Video of Belém Tower (Lisbon, Portugal)

Water from the Tagus River washes around the Belém Tower in Lisbon. Breaking ground in 1514 during Portugal’s golden age, the fortification is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the bartizens on the western side of the tower features a rhinoceros sculpture, which was meant to depict the notable pet of King Manuel I. Click to view my high-resolution photo collection from Lisbon, or click to read my feature article “Lisbon: A Warning to the Free World” about how Portugal’s Age of Discovery decline is a cautionary tale for the modern West.
