The steep climb to the top of Caana is worth the effort: The southerly vista stretches for miles across the dense Belizean jungle of the Maya Lowlands. Caana, which is Maya for “sky place,” is the largest temple at Caracol Natural Monument Reservation. The ruins were once an important city that thrived during the Maya Classic Period (250 CE – 900 CE).
