An inquisitive rock squirrel approaches me in hopes of food during a hiking break on the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park, AZ. The rodents are common in the canyon; they prefer rocky areas for building dens and hiding from predators. Although predominantly plant eaters, rock squirrels also feed on insects, small turkeys, and birds.
