The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte in Lisbon, Portugal, overlooks Barrio Alto and the distant Tagus River. The locks along the fence were left by lovers. While Lisbon has been inhabited for thousands of years by a succession of different cultures, almost all of the structures visible below are only a few centuries old. A cataclysmic earthquake rocked the city in 1755 CE, sending a tidal wave at least 20 feet high into the heart of the Portuguese capital. The city was virtually destroyed.
